Course Title: LIPID CHEMISTRY

Course Description: Structure and Biological Functions, Properties and Applications

Prerequisites: Chemistry 160 or 161a and 161b

Semester offered: First Semester

B. Learning Objectives:

 

At the end of the course the student should be able to:

 

1. Discuss the physical and chemical properties and structural features of different classes of lipids and their biological functions.

2. Describe the assembly of membrane compounds and correlate membrane organizations with function.

3. Discuss in detail the biological functions, metabolic regulation and degradation of plasma lipoprotein.

4. Explain and apply the principles and techniques used in lipid and membrane research.

D. MODE OF DELIVERY

 

The course will be delivered remotely. As a student enrolling in this course, most of the time, you will be studying on your own. Classes will be conducted asynchronously in our course site, which is the Elbi (e-learning Based Instruction). The course site can be accessed through this link http://ilcecourses.uplb.edu.ph . Login using your UP mail credentials. If you do not have access yet, contact ilc.uplb@up.edu.ph. Elbi can also be accessed using the Moodle app. All forms of learning materials (modules, study guides, quizzes, and others) will be uploaded in this site. An alternative learning management site (LMS) like Google Classroom or Edmodo will also be created by the lecturer/lecture partner. This alternative LMS will be used in case Elbi is problematic or cannot be accessed.

 

Most of the time, the class will be conducted using the synchronous mode of teaching. The session may be conducted through Zoom or other video conferencing app, during a consensually agreed upon time, which may not necessarily be the same as the SAIS schedule of this course. If agreed upon by everybody, the session will be recorded and the recording will be shared to you and the rest of the class, for later or repeated viewing.

1.      Attendance will be monitored, so make it to a point to visit the course site from time to time, especially during our class schedule. Also, by always visiting our course site, you will be on track to the progress of our lesson.

·        Cheating is a no no! You are a UP student. Always remember, Honor and Excellence. What is excellence when you do not have honor? Resist the temptation of any forms of cheating in all assessment types. The assessment is a gauge of how you have learned the topics. Looking into your notes/books or texting your classmates for answers defeats that purpose. The lecturer is willing to put that extra help to get you through this, especially in this trying time.
