Data Analysis and Modeling for Public Affairs. It is one of the core courses for students taking the Masters in Public Affairs, Institute for Governance and Rural Development, College of Public Affairs and Development, University of the Philippines Los Baños. It will be a ‘refresher course’ for those who have studied statistics and an introductory course for those have not. The course includes concepts, indices, selected tools and techniques, and application of selected techniques useful for public policy analysts and administrators.
We daily encounter numbers as we watch television, read newspapers, and magazines, and listen to radio, and in daily conversations. Examples are the news and stories about business, technology, cost of living, unemployment, medical breakthroughs, weather predictions, sports, politics, peace and order situation, and even the winning numbers in the lotto, small town lottery and number of people who are infected, new cases, died because of the corona virus pandemic . Although we are not always aware of it, each of us is an informal statistician (Fox, 1986). We constantly gather, organize, and analyze information and using these data to make judgments and decisions that will affect our actions.
